Ellen is the second oldest Petersen sibling and banjo player for the band. It didn’t take much for my parents to convince me to attend Summit. She’s taught me the value of thinking for myself, sneaking dessert, and getting involved in things I care about. Because the guitar is such a crucial instrument in a bluegrass band, dad held down the fort until Matt was solid on his rhythm. I’ve learned a thing about mine: Growing up with technology, we’ve had a platform our entire lives. Emmett doesn’t have a personal YouTube channel, but there are multiple videos of him with his family and other artist like Chelsea Moon. While other Christian camps I’ve attended have only given me spiritual motivation for a week, my relationship with the Lord has only grown stronger since I left Colorado. He currently plays piano in our Wednesday gospel shows and usually attends our other shows to hang out with all of you! When not playing groovy licks on the bass, you can find Karen reading a book and drinking hot tea. I researched the speakers, bought a notebook and tried to skim through books the speakers had authored. Katie at age 9 chose the violin and started taking classical lessons weekly.

We have two band rehearsals a week and one morning where we have individual practice time. God also used both the courage I gained from sharing my testimony and the Summit lectures as preparation for Missouri Girls State. We all have very different voices so usually it doesn’t take much thought on who naturally fits the feel of the song the best. Dad saw families sitting around playing music together and not watching TV or playing video games and decided our family would also become a bluegrass band! Dad plays the piano, guitar, bass, saxophone, and *drum roll please* KEYTAR, which is everything you think it is. As the Franz kids grew up, got married, and started having families of their own, Emmett began touring with other artists. Katie plays the most instruments of the band. Julianne started off playing the fiddle and clogging on stage when the band started in 2005 and has always been an audience favorite. After we decide we are going to learn a song, the vocalist chooses the key and Katie comes up with a basic layout/arrangement and mom helps create a chord chart. Ellen was first handed a banjo while the family was at its first bluegrass festival at which the kids’ dad decided the family should become a bluegrass band. When not playing music, Emmett is usually found dominating on the volleyball courts.

Emmett plans on joining us next year and we will have him as long as he is willing. So we wouldn’t keep changing schools, our mom homeschooled us and as we traveled around the country we were able to go see different historical sights. This one is a personal favorite. Sometimes, we as the church focus so much on bearing Christ’s image of perfection that we forget the value in relating how we got to that point. After American Idol, Ellen moved back to Branson to focus more on music and earned her MBA with a graduate certificate in marketing at Missouri State University.

Ellen graduated from College of the Ozarks in 2014 with a bachelors degree in Chemistry and moved to Oklahoma City to work as a laboratory technician.
